How to choose the right hiking trip

Hiking with Taiga Journeys
Is this the year you finally make it to the Yukon for a hiking trip? If so, here are a few thoughts about how to choose the right trip for you.
First, if you are reading this blog, you are most likely thinking about a guided trip. Having a guide will cut out a lot of research on your part. Your guide is familiar with the area and knows a great variety of places to go to and explore to choose from! You will have access to modern and functional equipment and your safety will be taken care off. You have never tented outside a designated campground or you are nervous about bears? No worries, you will learn how to deal with the great outdoors!

Second, you will have to decide if you want to enjoy your Yukon adventure as a series of day trips or if you want to venture on a multi-day backpacking trip. Following are a few thoughts on both options.

Day trips:
- I am carrying a light backpack
- I will sleep in a bed
- I will have access to a shower
- I am based close to a town
If this is you, check out the Kluane Day Hiking or the Tombstone Fall Colour Hikes

Multi-day backpacking:
- I am carrying a pack with all my gear, food and some of the group gear
- I am tenting
- I am helping with cooking simple meals on a camp stove
- I will wash up in a creek
- I am far away from civilisation
- I am out there 24/7, close to the stars, clouds, rainbows and wildlife
- I want to be fit to enjoy the trip
If this is you check out Cottonwood Trail, Yukon Coast Mountain Trekking, or Ruby Range Trekking.

Basecamp Hiking:
- I am enjoining being out in the wilderness
- I am tenting
- I am carrying a day pack
- I am helping with cooking simple meals on a camp stove
- I am far away from civilisation
- I am out there 24/7, close to the stars, clouds, rainbows and wildlife
- I want to be fit to enjoy the trip
Currently I don’t offer a scheduled trip in this category. This could be a trip customized to your schedule. This trip may include flights to and from the basecamp location.

A word on the different locations:
Kluane National Park is Yukon’s easiest accessible national park. It is home to Canada’s tallest mountain (Mount Logan) which can be seen from a sight-seeing flight. A great variety of established trails and the towering mountains of the St Elias Range are highlights.

Tombstone Territorial Park is a gem north of Dawson. The hikes are accessed from the Dempster Highway. There are a few established trails, but pretty cool off trail hiking is possible too.

The Coast Mountains offer great hiking in more alpine areas. Best access is by float plane. There are no trails and sometimes a bit of a scramble is needed. This is off the beaten track and you most likely don’t encounter other hikers.

The Ruby Range, just outside of Kluane National Park, is easily accessible and offers moderate hiking using old horse trails. This is off the beaten track and you most likely don’t encounter other hikers.

Trip Advisor review for the Kluane Day hiking tour in 2019:
“Amazing trip, my first time in the Yukon, beautiful place. My son and I joined two other solo travellers for a week of adventure. What made the trip was the group and our wonderful guide, Andrea who is full of passion and knowledge sharing with us every moment of the trip. We stayed at a wonderful spot near Haines Junction, each day venturing out to different hiking locations.” Suzace.,Vancouver
